Pregnancy & Nutrition

Pregnancy is an important nutritional time for both the mother and child.

According to developmental origins, it is hypothesized that conditions that occur in adulthood originate during the fetal period.

Crucial Macronutritional Needs in Pregnancy

Proteins

In pregnant rat models, it was found that protein deficiency can be associated with decreased birth weight and decreased heart weight. Through research, it has been suggested that meat should be the primary source of protein during pregnancy; vegetarianism and veganism during pregnancy is okay with appropriate supplementation.

Fats

DHA plays an important role as an anti-inflammatory precursor.

EPA helps to lower the risk of preeclampsia.

Omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial for brain development.

Fiber

A diet high in fiber helps to prevent asthma and it greatly positively impacts the gut microbiota.

WIC is a great program for people in need and is a Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. Anyone can apply to receive this federal aid although it is based on a priority system. This program prioritizes participants with serious health conditions like people who are anemic, underweight, and have a history of complications during pregnancy. WIC aims to be a safeguard for low-income families by providing referrals to health care and for giving useful information on healthy eating.
